Step 1: Check That the Title Is in Your Name
Only the owner of record (or an authorized agent) can request a certified copy. If the vehicle was never transferred into your name, you may need to complete the transfer first.
Step 2: Complete the Application
TxDMV uses an application for a certified copy of title. You’ll need the vehicle identification number (VIN), owner information and a valid photo ID.
Step 3: Submit It and Pay the Fee
You can usually apply by mail or at a TxDMV regional service center. A small fee applies. Check TxDMV’s website for current forms, fees and processing times.
Step 4: Sell Your Car
Once you have the certified copy, sign it over to the buyer. After the sale, submit a Vehicle Transfer Notification to TxDMV.
